Charles Marshall’s Diamond in the Rough: In 1992 I had illustrated a 6-page story, “Overkill,” for Innovation’s one-shot comic book, “Desert Storm: Send Hussein to Hell.” The story was written by Charles Marshall, and afterwards I worked with him on one of the concepts he had created: Diamond in the Rough about US spy who worked undercover as professional golfer. I penciled a short introductory story, which I have yet to find in my files, and I started very tight rough layouts on the first full length story, “High Impact.”
When I find the pencils to the short story, I’ll scan them and get them posted – In the meantime here are the surviving roughs, complete with dialogue and captions, for “High Impact.” If layouts for the second and fourth quarters of the book exist I have yet to find them. These layouts are on 8-1/2” x 11” bond paper, drawn at the finished size of a comic book. These layouts – which are much more finished than I usually did - would then be photocopied up to original art size and traced off as finished pencils and/or inks using a lightbox.
